President's Report

Dear Member,

On April 25th, we appointed a new Board of Directors for the 2024-25 fiscal year and will continue to strengthen and expand our value proposition to the Long Island and NYC community in the year ahead.  Our plans include:

1.      Compelling events in NYC and Long Island on timely supply chain topics.

2.      One-day educational courses on key supply chain and leadership topics to advance your career.

3.      Our annual gala on 10/16/24 at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY

4.      Coming soon: A new set of ASCM podcasts including our top-ranked Supply Chain Briefs

5.      Coming soon: ASCM certification courses via our third-party partner, Supply Chain Mavens

6.      Coming soon: Expanded career services including job postings and mentorship

In this time of supply chain uncertainty (think climate change and world conflicts) and rapid technological advances (like AI), it is more important than ever to join an organization that can keep you abreast of supply chain best practices and help support your career goals.  We are an ideal destination for young, mid-career and seasoned professionals who want to network and share best practices.  We also support the next generation – college students – with school visits, college chapters and unique events like our recent plant tour for graduate students.  Finally, we offer corporate partnerships for training, recruitment, and customized learning solutions.

As we look at the year ahead, I wanted to recap some key supply chain trends we are following closely.

1.      Procurement optimization: Many companies are rethinking the tradeoff between low cost and longer lead times and considering near-shoring (moving to local suppliers) and multi-sourcing (adding multiple vendors who can supply the same input) given that supply chain disruption will be the norm and not the exception.

2.      Integration and automation: Integration of supply chain internal functions and internal/external collaboration with suppliers and customers will continue to be important to reduce waste and increase supply chain response times.  AI and other new tools will help highlight trends and suggest actions, but human talent will still be the most important factor in your organization.  At the end of the day, the supply chain organization’s ability to influence corporate strategy will have a major impact on profitability and operating success.

3.      Environmental Impact: Reducing the impact of your company on the environment and having a plan to go to “zero waste” will be a competitive advantage in the future as governments and NGOs push on green solutions and responses to climate change.  The eco-friendly trend is part of a larger effort for companies to reach out to their community and build brand loyalty and differentiation.

In closing, we are always looking for volunteers and feedback on key needs from our community.  Feel free to reach out to me and our Board.

Best Regards,

Mark Temkin
